About the Journal
Jurnal Optimasi Sistem Industri (JOSI), ISSN 2442-8795 (online) and ISSN 2088-4842 (print), is a peer-reviewed, open-access scholarly journal published by the Industrial Engineering Department, Universitas Andalas, Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Since its establishment in 2001, JOSI has been committed to publishing high-quality research papers, technical papers, conceptual papers, and case study reports that undergo a rigorous peer-review process to maintain high standards of scholarly integrity. The journal publishes two issues per year, in June and December. Accepted articles may also be published online ahead of issue assignment.
JOSI focuses on the optimisation of soft systems aspects of industrial operations and engineering. Manuscripts addressing hard systems are also welcome, provided that they contribute to the optimisation of soft system aspects in line with the journal’s focus and scope. The journal encourages interdisciplinary approaches and supports research relevant to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly quality education, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, and responsible consumption and production.
JOSI provides immediate open access to all published articles under open licenses, supporting the wide dissemination of knowledge and ensuring that research is accessible to readers worldwide. For manuscripts submitted on or after 1 March 2026 and accepted for publication, an Article Processing Charge (APC) applies in accordance with the journal’s Fees policy. JOSI accepts manuscripts in English and may facilitate the translation of manuscripts submitted in other languages, subject to applicable translation charges and editorial approval.
JOSI is indexed in Scopus, DOAJ, and SINTA, and is ranked in Q3 of the Scimago Journal Rank. The journal maintains strong collaborations with Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia (PII) and BKSTI (Badan Kerjasama Penyelenggara Pendidikan Tinggi Teknik Industri), which contribute editorial board members, peer reviewers, and authors who support the journal’s aims and scope.
JOSI applies a rigorous editorial and peer-review process, maintains valid ISSN registrations, and ensures that all published content is freely accessible under open licenses. Submissions are welcome from authors of all affiliations, provided that the manuscripts align with the journal’s aims and scope. JOSI is owned by a public, non-profit institution that promotes research and scholarship.
Focus
Jurnal Optimasi Sistem Industri (JOSI) publishes research in industrial engineering and operations with a distinctive emphasis on decision-centric optimization of socio-technical (“soft”) systems, the human, organizational, and managerial dimensions that shape system performance. We also consider hard-systems studies (models, algorithms, technologies) when they directly support soft-systems optimization and demonstrably improve operational decisions.
Scope
- Decision and optimization in socio-technical systems: Soft Systems Methodology and other problem-structuring methods, system dynamics for policy design, multi-criteria decision making, and robust/stochastic/multiobjective optimization.
- Human factors and ergonomics in operations include work design, safety climate and culture, risk assessment, ergonomics evaluation, and human-automation teaming.
- Operations & supply chains: production planning and scheduling; logistics/last-mile; network design; sustainable/circular supply chains; inventory and demand forecasting; quality and reliability engineering.
- Data-driven operations research and analytics include discrete-event simulation, agent-based modeling, system dynamics simulation, heuristics and metaheuristics, artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to operations, and digital twins.
- Design & assets for operations: product/service and facility design when tied to measurable operations outcomes; maintenance; and asset management with reliability/optimization models.
- In the contexts of Industry 4.0 and 5.0, which include IoT, automation, and cyber-physical systems, the contribution is an operations and industrial engineering decision model.
Methods we prioritize
We use various methods such as optimization (exact/heuristic/metaheuristic), simulation (discrete-event, agent-based, system dynamics), MCDM, experiments/quasi-experiments, ergonomic field studies, survey-based structural models, and mixed methods to deliver actionable decision insights.
Out-of-scope (desk reject)
- General management/finance/industrial policy/HR topics without an operations/IE decision model or measurable system-performance link
- Purely descriptive case reports without method or validation
- Computer-science-centric papers (e.g., generic ML architectures) without a concrete operations application
